Rorke’s Drift Victoria Cross Ride Out 18th August

Sunday 18th August for a 10am departure.

Join us to hear the incredible story of two young Welsh lads who by their outstanding bravery were each awarded the Victoria Cross during the battle of Rorke’s Drift. Both in the same battle, and in fact both in the same building.  But after the award their lives took very different paths.

We will visit the graves of Pvt John Fielding VC & Pvt Robert Jones VC who both bravely defended the hospital building in the Battle of the defence of Rorke’s Drift against the massive Zulu army in January 1879.   Made famous, and probably better known to most of us more by the 1966 film ‘Zulu’ than the remarkable fact that a total of 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded as a result of outstanding bravery in the face of being incredibly outnumbered.

Meeting at Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar, just off the A469 on the top of Caerphilly Mountain Sunday the 18th of August for a 10am departure.  We will be passing through Cwmbran, where John Fielding is remembered and his name lives on,  where we will stop to pay him our respects, before visiting the small village of Peterchurch just over the border towards Hereford, to hear the sad tale of Robert Jones and to visit his remarkable grave.  Brave Heroes Both.

This ride out will take us towards Abergavenny & Hereford before taking the glorious roads through Golden Valley to Peterchurch.

A ride out with a purpose.  Come and join us.

Come on……… you know you want to.

  1. I’m up for this pending no unforeseen’s from she who must be obeyed.

Just returned from the IOM and can report my Bonnie and I didn’t even get close to the fastest lap record set by Caerphilly lad Malcolm Uphill on a Triumph Bonneville in 1969 with a new lap record of 100.37mph in a time of 22 mins 33.2 secs.

    Cheers
